In Frankfurt, two different types of fluid used for deicing differ in glycol and water composition, addition of thickeners and their properties. The decision as to which fluid is used for a deicing operation is made on a situational basis, depending on weather conditions, contamination or deicing location.
The fluid supplier is Kilfrost Europe NV (Antwerp, Belgium).
Type I deicing agent contains 80% glycol and no thickeners, so it is thin. Therefore, it is suitable for deicing while offering only limited protection against re-icing. Type I must always be mixed with water, the mixture being proportional to the temperature.
Type IV deicing agent contains 50% glycol and adheres better to the aircraft surface thanks to the use of thickeners. This allows winter precipitation to be absorbed and liquefied. Therefore, this deicing agent offers better holdover time. The deicing agent can be used in predefined mixtures (75% or 50%) or pure form, depending on the required protective effect.
